10 May 2024 Coup d'Etat!

On 10 May 2024, the new Emir of Kuwait, Mishal Ahmed Sabah, installed in his position in December 2023, carried out a coup d’état. He suspended the constitution, shut down the parliament so no one asks him and his relatives any pesky questions, and made himself an autocratic dictator. Since May 2024, his favourite tactic for dealing with citizens of Kuwait who dare to disagree with anything he says or does, is to revoke their citizenship. Mishal did all this at the sprightly age of 83 (born 1940) showing it is never too old to become a tyrant. He shares the very peculiar trait of so many other dictators from that part of the world: permanently black hair that never goes grey or white.

Poor Mishal has a desperate need for - and love of - money. Lots of money. Around the same time as he made himself the supreme ruler who can never make a mistake, he raised his own salary to 80 million KWD per annum. That is around just $265 million per year. This is how he compares to lesser heads of government presiding over nations far inferior to the State of Kuwait:
