    The "Shawaya"

This was used two times against me (April 2014 and May 2017), both times at the HQ of CID.

The literal translation of the word is “grill”, and it refers to the position the person is placed in, which is similar to how a grilled chicken is mounted.

The victim is tied in this position as in the drawing on the left. In my case, my hands and feet were tied with chains. They made me take off my clothes first, except my underwear. Then, I was blindfolded and chained, and the torturers would rip off the final piece of underwear and the humiliation would start. My mouth was sealed with duct tape.

Chained in this position, I was pulled up to the celing with a chain hoist. The victim is completely exposed and vulnerable in this positon ... the reader can imagine the things that are done to people tortured in this way.

The Shawaya is installed in a dedicated room in CID HQ.

    "Shawaya" - gas cylinder variation

The second time I was tortured in the Shawaya at CID HQ, a gas cylinder similar to the one in the picture on the left was placed on my stomach so I was forced to bend my naked body around it.

    The "Saaga"

This is a tiny room measuring no more than 1m x 1.5m that is kept totally dark and painted all in black, with a black asphalt floor and the only source of light being a small opening at the top of the iron door.

I was locked in the Saaga at State Security HQ in July 2010.

“Saag” in Arabic means the baking tray used in ovens, which is usually of black metal and “Saaga” is the feminine form of the word (in Arabic, “room” is a feminine noun).

The Saaga is a form of sensory deprivation torture. On the left is the view a prisoner sees if their eyes are open:
